In February to coincide with Safer Internet Day, South East Surrey resident, retired design engineer, Derrick Myers championed the internet to make it safer for older people.

Organisers hope that Safer Internet Day can inspire and promote safer use of the internet and encouraging the use of technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.

Derrick, a resident at the age-exclusive Elmbridge Village retirement complex in Cranleigh plays an active role at there with its growing number of computer users.

Giving his top tips, Derrick says: “I tend to follow a few basic rules which I have shared with fellow residents, many of who tend to communicate via email and also shop online.’

“We are lucky at Elmbridge Village to have an extra level of security provided by the Retirement Villages Internet system. My advice would be, enjoy the technology, but do be vigilant and careful.”
