Speak French? The Mid-Sussex Franco-British Society Is Celebrating 45 Years

2016 marks the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Mid-Sussex Franco-British Society based in Haywards Heath.

Throughout its existence, the group has followed its tradition of French being the main language of its monthly meetings. Members and visitors of varying levels of French have the opportunity to practise the language by listening to illustrated talks by French speakers and taking part in conversation.

Meetings are held monthly on a Wednesday evening between September and June from 8-10 p.m. in the Function Suite of Clair Hall in Haywards Heath.

Barbara Stevens told us topics in the monthly meetings in 2016 will cover such subjects as Quebec and francophone Canada, a film about Coco Chanel before she became the icon of haute couture, art dealer René Gimpel 1881-1945 and his association with well-known French painters of the day, Rose Valland and the protection of French works of art during wartime, and the role of the press since the war in reflecting and shaping public opinion.

There are also informal social meetings in December and June for members and invited guests.

Visitors’ fees are £4 per evening and annual membership £20. Further details are available from the Secretary, Mrs. Barbara Stevens, telephone 01444 452385 or email dandbstevens@btopenworld.com.
