This month, our charity of the month is Jigsaw (South East), based in East Grinstead since 2006, the charity offers support to children and young people in Surrey and parts of West Sussex who have a family member with a life-threatening illness. It also provides grief support to children and young people who have experienced the death of a loved one through illness, accident, suicide or murder, through specialised support groups.
Nationally, a child is bereaved of a parent every 22 minutes. In Surrey, an estimated 620 children aged between 0 – 17 lose their mum or dad every year, according to the Childhood Bereavement Network. The impact of a death or serious illness in the family can be devastating to a child or young person, and have a major impact on their home life, schooling and education, and their friendships.
Nickey Price, Jigsaw (South East)’s Operation Manager, says: “Our service provides support to children who have lost a close family member and those who have a family member with a serious illness. It can be a very confusing and emotionally difficult time for children; they are often bewildered and frightened and find it difficult to talk to adults who may also be having a difficult time. We provide these families with support and guidance and a safe place to talk about their emotions and encourage them to make memories whilst meeting others in the same situation.”
Last year, the charity received more than 400 enquiries from families in Surrey and West Sussex going through the worst times of their lives. It supported 50 families at its six-week grief support groups. There is no charge to access the charity’s services, which is dependent upon the support of the local community and beyond – particularly through some incredible fundraising challenges.
