County Council Helps West Sussex Veterans Return To Civilian Life

During the autumn which saw the nation mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, West Sussex County Council held workshops for council staff to learn how to support colleagues who are military veterans. The sessions followed the council’s commitment to those who have served in the military through the Armed Forces Covenant signed in 2017.

The council runs a guaranteed interview scheme to help those who have served in the military find a job afterwards, and four reservists applied through the scheme. The scheme aims to support the armed forces community in West Sussex and help reduce the risk of veterans developing health and welfare problems due to unemployment.

Fraser Pake, a military veteran and West Sussex County Council employee, says of the scheme:
“I saw a role that I felt was perfect at the county council, but I was concerned that I might not be given an opportunity to get to the interview stage. Once I was sure I met the criteria for the role, as a service leaver I had the option to request a guaranteed interview.”
