We have another update from Grahame and Tim, the East Grinstead pair who are raising money for The Greenaway Foundation. They are cycling cross-country from Santa Monica Beach, CA with their destination pinned as Boston, MA, totalling an impressive 3,800 miles. Today, the pair touched down in Oklahoma City, OK.
“78.5 miles today in the sunshine – our most humid day so far, but little in the way of wind coming ‘sweeping down the plain’. Lots of ‘wavin wheat’ and unfortunately we are expecting lots of rain this week. That could mean some disruption and shorter days. Given we are in tornado valley we are treating the weather reports with care. Clearly you’re not getting another song out of us after the tepid response to our Amarillo effort!”
“It was like cycling in the South Downs or the Cotswolds today – so green and the area is clearly part of the ‘breadbasket’ made up of some of the midwest states. Lunch was in a place called El Reno – not much open being a Sunday but we did grab a very good pizza and once again lots of chat with the locals about our adventure. There’s no doubt we and the bikes are attracting a lot of interest. Reactions continue to vary from disbelief to envy! Lots are keen to tell us their story too.”
“What better way to finish the day than coming across a Pride event with all its pomp colour and ceremony? It was buzzing. Our first event ever, honest. Our for a few hundred yards route had been taken over by a highly organised event overseen by about 10 police cars. Some outrageous costumes were on show. We managed to get out just before the parade and to our hotel…. this time a much better version of the ‘Super 8’ franchise.”
“Dinner was at a Cracker Barrel chain – perfectly adequate and they served beer! Lots of talk between Tim and I on the strategy for the next few days, in particular handling the wet weather and potential storms.”
“Saw two tortoises today (not us) and some red squirrels. Sadly also several Armadillo roadkill. No snakes or spiders. Feels good that we’re on the eastern side of a big city…. Only a few more to go before Chicago and the end of the Historic Route 66. Tim is pretending to be interested in the one-day cricket against the West Indies. I’m not sure he’s a convert really but he’s humouring me!”
