For several years now UK home winter trends have been influenced by hugely popular Scandinavian imports including Hygge, Lagom and Gluggavedur, all of which have brought a dash of Viking living to UK family homes.
Hygge, a Danish living concept which is all about creating a living space which is cosy and one where the occupant is content with their environment. Hygge design is about warm and welcoming, and enjoying good times – ideal for Christmas as you entertain friends and family for hours upon hours. Hygge is synonymous with winter and makes those long winter evenings that little more bearable.
Lagom which originates from Sweden roughly translates as just the right amount – it is an approach to life where everything is in moderation, a popular message this time of year. Lagom is therefore not just a way of designing your home, but instead a state of mind and can be applied to other aspects of life – although when it is applied to home design, the essence is all about unfussy and minimalist with an eye to the well made goods.
Gluggavedur, a lesser known concept from Iceland means window-weather which is all about getting comfy and watching the world go by outside of the window. This is true in winter when the weather may look okay from the inside out, but outside it is truly rotten, as a concept there is a large nod to window dressings, think attractive blinds and curtains creating the perfect window on the world.

A winter lounge look to behold remains one which contains a roaring fire, the look, the heat and the sounds of crackling wood all come together to create the perfect ambience for the family home at Christmas. Today, wood-burning stoves have made something of a comeback, and they have come on leaps and bounds in design, with modern, stylish designs offering a great centrepiece for all to enjoy on a winter’s day.
Nothing beats winter evenings quite like a slow-burning fire with a stove achieving just that and as well as offering great visuals, stoves add heat to a room which can save you money on your energy bills in the long run as they heat not just the room they are found in but adjoining rooms too. In addition, some stoves can help to heat your food, and on some occasions your household water.
