5th Crawley (Three Bridges) Beaver Scout Group

The 5th Crawley (Three Bridges) Beaver Scout Group is a fun group meeting in Three Bridges for 6 – 8 year-olds. Now, organisers are calling on you, if you have a child to get them signed up before their remaining places go! This month, I met with Linda Killick, assistant club scout leader to learn more.

Beavers are the youngest members of the scout movement, they generally meet for an hour a week and is the first introduction to what Scouting has to offer – being introduced to outdoor activities, having the opportunity to be creative, explore their community and experience the excitement of a Beaver Scout sleepover with their friends.

Beaver Scouts are aged between 6 and 8 years old but there is flexibility in the age range, young people can join from age 5¾, and can move to Cubs between age 7½ and 8½. Although, it may sometimes be appropriate to extend this flexibility for young people with additional needs best met with a specific age group or range.

Linda Killick, assistant club scout leader, said: “Beavers is not actually a club. The group is part of the scout movement. The beavers’ was formed in the late 1960s for 6 – 8 year olds.”

Since the 1960s Beavers across Britain have enjoyed a range of activities which are both entertaining and educational which are practical and transferable into other areas of their lives – at school, at home and the next level of Scouts.

“They do all sorts of exciting activities including cooking, crafts, local visits to paces of interest, sleepovers, first aid training and basic compass and map skills” Linda added.

This year the group had a sleepover in Littlehampton to coincide with Armed Forces Day, and on Sunday, April 23 they joined with cubs and scouts of the group in Crawley High Street to celebrate St George’s Day with the rest of Crawley district scout groups – this is an annual event.
