Rugby Club Scrums Together For Sussex Charity

Members of one Sussex rugby club have scrum together in style to raise money for a Sussex-based child bereavement charity. Uckfield Rugby Football Club’s club charity, Founding Fathers, organised a special ladies night held at the team’s clubhouse to raise money for Oscar’s Wish Foundation on a night which brought the community together – sporting and non-sporting.

In the spring as the rugby season moved towards a close, more than 50 Sussex ladies attended a fun-filled evening held at Uckfield Rugby Club’s clubhouse. Guests were welcomed not by tackles or by line-outs on arrival, but with a glass of bubbles and canapés, and were served a selection of tasty hot and cold food throughout the evening, which raised more than £700.00 for Oscar’s Wish Foundation (OWF).

OWF has been chosen by Founding Fathers as its charity of the year and as such the stops were pulled out by the charitable wing of the club as its members got to work organising the event. The charity which launched in 2015 offers comfort and support to parents, siblings, other family members and friends who have experienced the loss of a baby before, during or shortly after birth.

The evening’s guests were addressed by Gemma Kybert who set up the charity in 2015, and there were other opportunities during the evening to donate and discuss the charity’s activity with Gemma and her colleagues from the Sussex charity which works closely with both the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and Haywards Heath’s Princess Royal Hospital in providing support to those who need it most.

Last year, the charity completed a three-month project to refurbish the early pregnancy unit at Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. With the theme of comfort, a fresh, new quiet room was established, and was officially renamed the little stars room upon its reopening. It is hoped that fundraising events like the Founding Fathers Ladies Night can help the charity to support more of those who need it.

Speaking about the Ladies Night fundraiser on social media, charity founder, Gemma Kybert said: “An enormous thank you to the Founding Fathers from Uckfield Rugby Rugby Club. Such a wonderful night, and laughter, fun and giggles had by all!”
