Redhill resident Malcolm Bainbridge proved he had the power when he scooped the title of European Masters Power lifting Champion in the 70 – 80 year-old category in Sweden earlier this year.

Malcolm, 73, won an individual gold medal for the deadlift, along with two bronze medals for the bench press and the squat, with a combined score for these lifts giving him overall gold.

Malcolm who trains at the YMCA East Surrey gym in Redhill attributes much of his sporting success to the support he has received from the fitness staff and fellow gym members.

Malcolm says: “It isn’t always easy to find the right facilities and I’ve tried a lot of different places over the years. Here, there is a good set up for weight training – it’s a great community resource.”

Strongman Malcolm is a non-smoker and does not drink alcohol, he believes that his clean-living and healthy lifestyle and approach to life in general plays a vital part in his success.

“It’s important to me to show other people that winning isn’t about taking performance enhancing drugs. I’d like to inspire those who are getting involved in the sport to embrace
a clean image” he adds.
