New Surrey Sports Facility Opened By Paralympian Legend

More than 100 invited guests gathered to see YMCA East Surrey’s new inclusive sports facility in Redhill declared open by 16-time Paralympic medallist and sporting legend, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

The impressive, new inclusive sports facility will expand YMCA East Surrey’s ability to support those with disabilities and long-term health conditions and will act as a health and wellbeing centre of excellence.

Baroness Grey-Thompson said: “It’s really important that disabled people have the opportunity to exercise. Physical activity is so important for disabled people to get to work and in their daily lives.”

The new, fully accessible and completely disability-friendly facility is a £2.6 million underfloor-heated sports hall which was almost nine years in the planning from its initial conception to its final completion.

Fay Hart, a 28-year-old member of YMCA East Surrey Boccia team, says: “I have celebral palsy and epilepsy. When I first came, I was nervous and not very fit. Boccia has changed my life and my attitude.”
