Live Music Is This Haywards Heath Society’s Forte

On Saturday, September 23 2017, internationally renowned pianist Samson Tsoy will make a return visit to Haywards Heath Music Society with a special performance held at St Wilfrid’s Church in the town.

The Haywards Heath Music Society is a local organisation founded in 1941 by Gertrude Lampson, with the objective to promote the presentation of public concerts and recitals across the district.
For more than 75 years, the Haywards Heath Music Society has been responsible for organising live music performances in the town and the surrounding area on a monthly basis.

These performances cover a wide spectrum of musical styles while displaying the talents of artists ranging from gifted young pupils through to professionals, both aspiring and established.

The society has an archive of many well-known names such as clarinet extraordinaire Emma Johnson and Scottish virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie.

In the past year, the society celebrated its 75th season – a testimony to the vision of the founders, and their aim of bringing professional musical talent and established performers to Mid Sussex.

Although they face increased competition from other local organisations, their continuing goal is to provide a varied and entertaining selection of concerts which appeal to a wide audience, meaning there is something for everyone.

2017 has so far seen some exceptional musical highlights, including a concert by the BBC Young Musician of 2012, cellist Laura van der Heijden, accompanied by the acclaimed pianist Tom Poster, who was making a return visit to the society.

Their technical brilliance resulted in a world-class performance of a varied and challenging programme. In March, there was an opportunity to listen to some of the best young musical talent in the district at the Young Musicians’ Showcase (YMS), from soloists to larger ensembles.

The annual event gives a platform for musicians up to the age of 18 to showcase their work to the public. The next YMS auditions are being held on Wednesday, February 21 2018 for the concert on Saturday, March 17 2018. If you would like the chance to display your musical talent in front of a public audience, then please visit their website for more information.

As if the performance by classical pianist Samson Tsoy was not enough, the dedicated committee members have worked tirelessly to ensure the programme for 2017/18 is full of musical treats.

These performances include an evening with the Australian classical guitarist, Andrey Lebedev on Saturday, November 18 2017 and an evening with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) Ambassadors on Saturday, April 28 2018.

The NYJO Ambassadors will present a programme based on the Great American Songbook, a source of many jazz classics, interspersed with more contemporary pieces.

Most concerts are held in the impressive surroundings of St Wilfred’s Church, offering beautiful acoustics and ambience, or in the more intimate atmosphere of the Methodist Church, both of which are in Haywards Heath.

If you enjoy attending live concerts and discovering new musicians, then please consider becoming a member. The ticket prices have been set to make the membership worthwhile.
As well as obtaining tickets at a reduced rate, you will receive three newsletters a year and will be able to take part in social events the society holds.
