Town’s Lions’ Specs Appeal Revealed

Town’s Lions’ Specs Appeal Revealed

Have you donated unwanted spectacles to Haywards Heath Lions? If so, have you ever wondered what happens to your used spectacles that you kindly donate? The Lions are now revealing the story behind the specs.

Unwanted and used spectacles are collected by Haywards Heath Lions at optician drop-off points in the town and sent to a recycling centre and run by Chichester Lions Club at Apuldram, near the city of Chichester.

The centre has been collecting recycled spectacles for almost 35 years and during this time thousands of spectacles, contact lenses and frames, originally destined for the rubbish heap, have been sorted and graded.

Following the centre’s work, the spectacles are sent to Medico France for cleaning and for distribution to those who need them in nations including Bolivia, Brazil, Cameroon, India, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Senegal and Sri Lanka.
