Smiles All Round with Dunottar School
During an unprecedented period of school closure, it was smiles all round with Dunottar School in Reigate, as they launched its “Funny Faces” art competition to all Year 5 pupils in the local area.
Pupils were asked to create a face based on the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, an Italian painter. He was best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and books.
The competition received a tremendous response, with entries from over 40 pupils, attending 10 different primary and independent preparatory schools in the region.
The children’s creativity and flair impressed the judges, using a range of materials from leaves to rhubarb, crayons and pencil shavings, pasta and sweets, clothes, crisps and coins.
Belinda Horn, Head of Visual Arts, who ran the competition commented:
“This was one of the hardest art competitions I have ever had to judge. The standard of the entries was exceptional. I was amazed by how inventive the pupils were when choosing materials to use for their ‘Funny Faces’. There were flowers and sweets, books and tools as well as clothes and garden equipment. Every single one of them made me smile.”

The imaginative winning entry was created by James Liddiard, from Redhill, using coins, pencils and even toy soldiers. Second and third places were awarded to pupils at Reigate Parish, St John’s Primary and Reigate Priory School.
The activity provided a fun and interesting challenge for pupils whilst they were unable to attend school.
