“As a stylist, I always encourage people to look beyond the size and colour on the hanger,” says Sophia. “Try things on. Dresses can look completely different once they’re on your body.”

This is particularly true with pre-loved fashion, where sizing may vary between brands, decades and designers. A dress that doesn’t immediately stand out on the rail can often become a surprise favourite in the fitting room.

Another misconception is that second-hand dresses need to fit perfectly from the start.

Sophia points out that simple alterations can completely transform a garment. Taking in a waist, shortening a hemline or adjusting straps can make a dress look as though it was made especially for the wearer.

Bride story: “I found the one’’

RH local Esther, alongside mum, Jackie, and her best friend and maid of honour, Annie-Rose, spent the day visiting lots of different bridal shops, trying on all kinds of dresses. The group eventually came across St Catherine’s Bridal.

‘‘I’d always said, “You’re only going to wear it for one day,” but I still wanted to feel truly special in my wedding dress.’’

The dresses in the boutique were absolutely beautiful, Esther says, and she tried on a huge variety of styles. Then, she found the one.

The dress was missing the ribbon for the back of the corset, but one of the lovely ladies in the shop went upstairs and found the exact matching ribbon. It felt like it was meant to be. At just £120, we simply had to buy it. Later, we discovered the dress was by Pronovias, a luxury bridal designer, which made the find feel even more special.’’

To complete the look, Esther had a custom cape made by Hope & Harlequin in Brighton, which paired perfectly with the dress.

‘‘I’ll always be grateful to St Catherine’s Bridal for helping me find such a special piece,’’ she concluded.
