It is estimated that one in every two men will have a problem with their prostate at some stage of their life, whether it is an infection, enlargement or cancer. While, one in eight men develop prostate cancer and those of African-Caribbean origin and those with a family history of the disease are two to three times more at risk.
This month, on Saturday, November 24 Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO) in partnership with the East Grinstead Lions brings Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing to East Court Manor from 10.00am to 4.00pm. The testing which is open to all men aged 45 to 80 involves a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen.
It is not a direct test for cancer, a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem, a high reading triggers further tests to determine if there is a need for treatment. Testing is conducted by phlebotomists taking a blood sample from a vein in the arm. Every man will be counselled and receive information about the test and the prostate.
