Whether your child is starting school for the first time, or returning after the holidays, one thing’s for certain – a little prep goes a long way. We asked Primary School Headteacher Trudy Emberson to share her top tips.
It is completely normal for children to feel nervous about returning to school. Encourage your child to talk about their feelings and listen calmly to any concerns they may have. Sometimes children simply need reassurance that their worries are understood. Remind your child of the things they are looking forward to; seeing friends, meeting their teacher or taking part in favourite activities. Focusing on positive expectations can help build confidence.
Parents and carers can help by keeping conversations positive and avoiding sharing adult anxieties with their child. If you show confidence and optimism about school, your child is more likely to feel secure.
A healthy start to the school year also includes practical essentials – here are some tips to ensure a positive and productive start to the term.
Re-establish routines
Whether it’s an earlier wake-up, or a consistent time for meals – entering back into the habit of consistent timings makes the transition to a school day less disruptive, and more seamless.
Good sleep patterns
Getting a proper night’s sleep helps focus, boosts attention span, and supports emotional regulation.
Limited time on devices
Reducing screen time before school starts makes it all the easier to settle back into classroom routines.
Nutritious food and plenty of water
A balanced diet and good hydration help children maintain their energy levels and stay focused throughout the school day.
Outdoor play
Regular time outdoors boosts wellbeing and gives children a chance to burn off energy before returning to the classroom.
Most importantly, remember that every child settles in school at their own pace. If your child struggles to settle into school, it’s always best to let the school know. Working together ensures that children receive the support they need to thrive.
