A Positive Approach to Dementia

Dementia touches the lives of many families. In these situations, a holistic and positive approach is essential – to ensure that we care for ourselves and one another along the way. By Parveen Khan

Honesty is key
Open and honest conversations are a must. Families benefit from talking openly about what is happening, what may happen in the future, and whether everyone feels prepared and supported for the journey ahead. Creating a shared understanding reduces uncertainty and helps build a strong foundation of empathy and teamwork.

Sharing responsibilities
Practical organisation also plays a key role. Establishing a weekly or monthly timetable – covering responsibilities such as shopping, cooking, taking out the rubbish, spending time with the loved one, or arranging walks and activities – can make a meaningful difference. In many families, the caring role can unintentionally fall on one person, which can lead to stress and imbalance. Sharing tasks ensures fairness, creating a more sustainable care environment.

Planning ahead
It’s also important to consider legal and financial planning. Discussions around power of attorney and the Mental Capacity Act may feel difficult but addressing them early can prevent misunderstandings and conflicts later on.
Thoughtful planning provides peace of mind and supports better decision-making as needs evolve. Recognising that dementia care is a team effort also reminds us that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

A sense of purpose
Alongside planning and communication, meaningful activities can greatly enhance quality of life. Gardening, for example, is both therapeutic and engaging.

Raised flower beds allow easy access and encourage participation, whether planting seeds, watering flowers, or simply enjoying the colours and scents of a garden.

Engaging with the past
Storytelling is another powerful tool. Many people living with dementia retain vivid memories of their past, particularly childhood experiences. Encouraging them to share stories, looking through old photographs, or watching familiar films can spark joy and connection, helping preserve identity while creating moments of shared happiness.

Ultimately, supporting a loved one with dementia is a shared journey that benefits from patience, understanding, and compassion. By working together, families can create an environment filled with dignity, connection, and care.
